Preparing for the next flu pandemic
continues to be a focus of the Communicable Disease Program. Health experts
advise that communities must prepare for a 40% reduction in the workforce in the
event of a
pandemic. Health Department staff has been meeting with city and county
officials to develop continuity of operation plans which would go into effect
during a disaster, such as a flu pandemic. Health Department staff is developing
plans to cover all-hazards that may affect the community. While Defiance County
does not need to prepare for a tsunami or a hurricane, the county does need to
prepare for the health effects of a flood or a tornado.
The Communicable Disease staff
continues to work with our community partners for recognizing signs and symptoms
of a disease outbreak. In an effort to educate the public on steps to take to
minimize the spread of germs, Health Department staff began the "Cover Your
Cough" campaign - teaching the public to cough and sneeze in their sleeves and
wash their hands frequently.
Educating the public about Family and Personal Preparedness is another focus of
the Communicable Disease staff. Everyday life could be disrupted due to people
in communities across the nation becoming ill at the same time. Basic services
such as water and trash pick-up could be disrupted. Delivery of goods to stores
may be delayed for some time. Stocking up on essential food, personal items,
medical supplies and household goods are part of basic personal and family
preparedness. It is important to have a record of key personal medical
information and emergency contacts for every person in the family. Planning
ahead will hopefully bring peace of mind and confidence in being able to respond
to a disaster.
